If you want to learn Italian, there’s no better way to do it than to go to Italy and immerse yourself in the language. By the time you leave Italy you should be fully versed in the semantics of the country. What you don’t expect to happen, though, is for your entire being and mindset to change. Not only has the language changed you, but the culture, the people, the fashion, the slangs, the technology, and the food have all done their respective work as well. Every facet of the country is an influencer. Lately, I’ve been learning ‘business sense’ instead of Italian, and JBKnowledge, Inc. has been my Italy.

When I was hired as an intern, I had one aim: to learn more about business and gain experience for a future job. Halfway through my first semester here, I can already tell that these hopes will be met. Being immersed in a competitive, growing company that focuses on business development and creating efficient business processes will do that for you. What I did NOT see coming, was the amount of information I would learn about construction and technology.

My job title is Business Development Intern. How much would I really need to know about construction for that? EVERYTHING. My first couple of weeks were not just spent learning about the business and sales techniques. They were spent asking questions about general contractors, subcontractors, semantics, typical pricing structures for a construction company, what bidding is…the list goes on and on. I learn more about the construction world every day.  Luckily, I am surrounded by construction science professionals and students (many of my fellow interns) who are able to help me when I need it.

Technology is a huge part of this company. Not only are we a software company, but we focus on maintaining a paperless office. Just about everything JBKnowledge employees work on is in Google Drive, our in-house project management software, or our online CRM, allowing us to eliminate paper and printing almost entirely.

JBKnowledge President James Benham’s passion for technology has also opened up my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities.  Technologies and apps like Nest, Onstar, Philips Hue light bulbs, Smart Things, drones, and IFTTT are just a few of things that my fellow interns and I have been introduced to. The capabilities of these technologies are mind blowing, and I now find myself trying to keep up with all of the latest technological advances I can find.
