Building the OpenDive Low Cost Virtual Reality Headset
With the virtual reality industry exploding, a low cost virtual reality headset is a critical component to building new products. The OpenDive is an open-source virtual reality headset that uses your phone as a screen. You can build it yourself for under $20 with the aid of a 3d printer. In this blog post, I’ll walk you through what you need to know to build one.
There are three parts required to build the OpenDive virtual reality headset: the 3d printed plastic assembly, lenses, and a strap.
First, you’ll need to download the 3d model from Thingiverse, Makerbot’s online catalog of 3d files. Go ahead and print this 3d model on your 3d printer. We used a Makerbot Replicator 2X and can print the plastic assembly in a few hours.
Next, you’ll need lenses and a strap. Dive has a kit on Amazon that contains both the lenses and the strap, but unfortunately as of late they have been backordered as Google Cardboard recommends the same kit so demand has been very high. We alternatively purchased these lenses on Amazon (25mm diameter and 45mm focal length) and purchased elastic at a fabric store to create a strap.
Now that you have all the components, simply snap together the plastic assembly, slide the lenses into the lens holders, and thread the strap through the slots.
With the assembled VR headset, you can now slide your phone in to use as the screen. Dive has a list of virtual reality games and experiences you can download to try in your device. Since the headset is universal, any virtual reality experience you find on your phone’s mobile app store should work.
Like Jimi Hendrix once said, “In order to change the world, you have to get your head[set] together first”.
